Global Kids' Digital Media InitiativeThe Global Kids project, based in New York and supported by the MacArthur Foundation, is foccused on raising young people's awareness on a range of issues including human rights, the rights of the child, the environment and respecting difference. The project uses a number of techniques to engage participants, including activities within Teen Second Life including leadership programs, major events which allow teens to communicate and interact with world leaders and experts in a range of fields, and creative projects exploring a range of global issues.A range of projects have been undertaken by the Global Kids community, including:
Although adults are unable to visit the Teen Grid, you can find out more about Global Kids at their Info Space on the Main Grid (SLurl). This space seeks to promote and share the work of the Global Kids team, and also hosts a range of discussions and presentations on related topics for educators. Save the Children's Yak ShackThe Save the Children project, in collaboration with Aimee Weber Studios embarked on a unique fundraising and public education experiment in Second Life in 2007. Following on from their successful campaign to buy a real life yak for families in third world countries, they sponsored a the creation of the Yak Shack.Second Life visitors were invited to purchase a yak for L$1000. All proceeds collected from virtual Yak sales are then donated to the real life Yak fund. Additionally residents were invited to take part in a competition to dress up their yak using Second Life's unique content creation tools.
