Data Visualisations and Simulations

Advanced scripting and building tools built into the Second Life platform allow for the development of complex data visualisations and simulations.

Seifert Surface’s Mathematical Sculptures

Seifert Surface (Henry Segerman in RL) generates mathematical sculptures illustrating mathematical concepts such as knots, ruled surfaces, fractals, and Serpinksi Triangles. His work explores both art and mathematical concepts, and have been displayed at many locations in Second Life since 2006.

Each sculpture comes with an explanatory notecard, which details the mathematical concepts and inspiration behind each of the works. Seifert's Sculptures can be viewed at a number of locations in Second Life including the NMC Campus Welcome Center (SLurl) or at Seifert's Sculpture Garden at the xyz Sim (SLurl) and are also regularly exhibited at other locations.

For more information visit Henry Segerman's Second Life website, read a blog post about Seifert's work at NPIRL, read Mathematical Art and Hyperformalism: Artforms that Feel at Home in Virtual Reality or read an article on 'Math in Second Life'.

Matt Biddulph's Cellular Visualisations

In 2007, Matt Biddulph aka Matt Basiat was contracted by the scientific journal Nature.com use Second Life to create an environment in Second Life to support a community of scientists.

As part of this project, Biddullp used the used building and scripting tools built into Second Life to render gigantic island-sized bacterias. These immersive models allowed allows scientists to walk around 3D version of their own cellular models.

In this video of Matt Biddulph at the Google Open Source Code Jam he discusses ideas for using Second Life for the visualisation of scientific data and other practical applications of the 3D environment to science.

Second Earth - Live mashup of Second Life and Google Earth

The Second Earth (SLurl) project is a 3d mashup of Google Earth and Second Life. It was built by National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 2008 and is part of the Scilands continent. Second Earth is a fantastic example of how virtual worlds can be used to display informtion which is very hard to represent in the real world or in 2d environments.

Using KML (Key-hole markup language) which allows uers to add their own data as a layer in the Google Earth, NOAA have designed a KML importer for Second Life which allows those datasets to be displayed in a collaborative virtual environment.

The 90 meter scale model globe has been created to match the actual topography of the earth (magnified to scale so visitors can view) and currently shows the real time position of several satellites.

For more information read an article about Second Earth, read a blog post about Second Earth or watch a video about the project on Youtube.

IBM's Real-time Display of Tennis Tournaments

Commencing in October 2006, IBM have been working on a proof of concept for tracking real world data of actual tennis matches in Second Life. Matches from the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon 2008 have been displayed in Second Life, using data which has traditionally been used to feed the tournament websites.

Most recently, IBM have created a mini-Wimbledon 2007 in Second Life, which includes includes an RSS weather feed globe, a data-tracking tennis court that appears to reproduces each shot, a tennis shop where residents can get free tennis clothing and merchandise and a range of videos and information about Wimbledon and IBM. Residents can visit virtual Wimbledon on IBM 7 (SLurl).
