[1:29] Malcolm Dalgleish: This group of students looked at work skills and developed a resort
[1:30] Malcolm Dalgleish: Miranda would you like to add anything
[1:30] Malcolm Dalgleish: The students had to apply for their jobs, sit a virtual interview
[1:30] Malcolm Dalgleish: Dipped in and out of real life and second life
[1:30] Miranda Whittaker: Thats it in a nutshell Malcolm
[1:31] Malcolm Dalgleish: Students then hosted the tourists
[1:31] Miranda Whittaker: The students had had no experience SL prior to the project
[1:31] jokay Wollongong: Oh the tourist event was so much fun ;)
[1:31] Biddy LaFontaine: Students developed work roles, names and uniforms.
[1:31] Miranda Whittaker: And they loved every second of it!!
[1:31] Miranda Whittaker: Much easier than trying to teach that stuff face to face
[1:31] Malcolm Dalgleish: Miranda how many learning outcomes did you cover in the 8 weeks
[1:31] WillowGypsy Writer: Certainly more engaging
[1:32] Miranda Whittaker: Although we covered about 15 outcomes..
[1:32] WillowGypsy Writer: And a way to get in touch with students who struggle with 'traditional' ;llearning
[1:32] Miranda Whittaker: They were only the ones that we chose to assess
[1:32] Miranda Whittaker: there were lots more we could have used
[1:32] Malcolm Dalgleish: Was very engaging
[1:32] Sean McDunnough: ok... thanks guys...
[1:32] Malcolm Dalgleish: Jo kay we have another presenter talking
[1:33] Sean McDunnough: any last questionns before we move on?
[1:33] Miranda Whittaker: Students built the resort from the ground up
[1:33] Sean McDunnough: you can always IM Malcolm
[1:33] Biddy LaFontaine: The regular discussion offline added to the learning.
[1:33] Miranda Whittaker: everything was collected free from within SL
[1:33] Malcolm Dalgleish: Thanks feel free to contact us
[1:33] Miranda Whittaker: and placed it on our island
[1:33] Edith Halderman: where are we going?
[1:33] Spinner Mills: thanks Malcolm
[1:33] Malcolm Dalgleish: Also refer to today's network presentation

[1:35] Spinner Mills: particularly with a slow connectiion
[1:36] Sean McDunnough: please don't click on the slide viewer
[1:36] Spinner Mills: still nothing, after I pressed play. Will it be on the big screen?
[1:36] Malcolm Dalgleish: Click on history
[1:36] Isa Goodman: CC press Crtl H to bring up the chat history
[1:36] Spinner Mills: oooh, is it orange?
[1:37] Sean McDunnough: isn't that just our luck...
[1:37] Sean McDunnough: the video played every time we didn't want it to play....
[1:37] Sean McDunnough: and now it won't play
[1:37] Sean McDunnough: Isa.. are you ready to go up?
[1:37] Isa Goodman: yup
[1:38] Sean McDunnough: okay... come on up
[1:38] CDB Barkley: may have to rescale repeats on the screen texture
[1:38] Sean McDunnough: Isa will talk about NZ projects
[1:38] Isa Goodman: Evening everyone
[1:38] Isa Goodman: First up I’d like to introduce myself. As you can all see my Second Life name is Isa Goodman but in real life I’m Aaron Griffiths
[1:39] Isa Goodman: online manager for Software Educational Resources Ltd.
[1:39] Isa Goodman: This is a publishing company which produces training materials both in book and interactive online forms for the New Zealand Qualifications Authority curriculum.
[1:39] Isa Goodman: In terms of my personal involvement in Second Life I rezzed for the first time in May of 2006 purely on a research basis
[1:40] Isa Goodman: related to a NZQA unit standard we were developing on future technologies and though not instantly hooked was intrigued enough to continue to investigate this new world
[1:40] Isa Goodman: Came into being Willow
[1:40] Miranda Whittaker: Dont we all hide behind 'purely for research' lol
[1:40] Isa Goodman: The appeal at the time was very directly related to my interest in gaming environments and the possibilities of their use in educational contexts
[1:41] Isa Goodman: as I had up to that point been researching the topic and over the previous year had developed a 2D role playing game engine for displaying XML authored, choice-based scenarios
[1:41] Malcolm Dalgleish: Excuse to play chuckle
[1:41] Biddy LaFontaine: Sorry, I have to go. Thanks so much for organising this great event.
[1:41] Isa Goodman: My involvement in Second Life however took on a lot more focus after the 2006 eFest, which is the main elearning event on the New Zealand conference calendar
[1:41] Sean McDunnough: thanks biddy
[1:41] jokay Wollongong: Fantastic Isa! ;)
[1:42] Isa Goodman: Not only did I meet up with jokay and Sean for the first time but in almost every keynote presentation Second Life itself got a mention
[1:42] Isa Goodman: ty jokay *smiles*
[1:42] Isa Goodman: There were also a number of conversations had amongst the attendees around using MUVEs in an educational context so I guess at that stage I got a little more excited about it all
[1:42] Sean McDunnough: yay!
[1:42] Isa Goodman: multi user virtual environmnets
[1:42] Isa Goodman: lol
[1:43] Isa Goodman: This encouraged me to take a much more public stand on the possibility of using Second Life in an educational context in New Zealand and in that vein I created a project on the New Zealand educational innovation site Eduforge
[1:43] Isa Goodman: The intention of the project site, NZ Education in a Virtual World, was to gather together those who had shown an interest in that same possibility
[1:43] jokay Wollongong: Yes.. Isa's resources on EduForge are great! ;)
[1:43] Miranda Whittaker: doing what??
[1:43] Miranda Whittaker: Still with GippsTAFE??
[1:43] Malcolm Dalgleish: Good on ya lsa there are lots of educational options
[1:43] Isa Goodman: Using SL as an educational platform
[1:44] Isa Goodman: Unfortunately others’ interest in Second Life appeared to dwindle after eFest as quickly as it had ignited and I ended up hoeing a rather lonely row
[1:44] Sean McDunnough: please don't play the video
[1:44] jokay Wollongong: We're with ya Isa! ;)
[1:44] Isa Goodman: That is until a chance meeting with Arwenna Stardust, a professor from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, who was following a similar path to mine and had actually rented a parcel of land on Eduisland for the purposes of pursuing educational interests
[1:44] Isa Goodman: See red head in the second row *smiles*
[1:45] Isa Goodman: Over the next few months we met quite often and traded ideas on how we might pursue the development of a New Zealand dedicated educational sim
[1:45] Isa Goodman: Arwenna set up a Second Life Special Interest Group on NMITs Moodle installation to promote discussion in her tertiary and I promoted the possibility in any way I could through my project blog
[1:45] Isa Goodman: Nelson Marlborough Institute NMIT
[1:45] Isa Goodman: Eventually Arwenna approached her CEO to discuss possibilities. I think it was a huge shock to both of us when he agreed basically on the spot to fund the purchase and a year’s maintenance of an island
[1:46] Isa Goodman: Obviously we were both jumping for joy at the news
[1:46] jokay Wollongong: Such fantastic news Isa! ;)
[1:46] Isa Goodman: Yes it really is
[1:46] jokay Wollongong: Congrats to both of you for putting in the hard yards! ;)
[1:46] Isa Goodman: Since then we have held a two day workshop down in Nelson with a number of academics from the tertiary and have begun to formulate some of the projects that will kick off NMIT’s presence in Second Life
[1:47] Isa Goodman: That finished just yesterday and still a bit drained from the process
[1:47] Malcolm Dalgleish: Is great fun trying to buy virtual land through the finance people chuckle
[1:47] Isa Goodman: There are a number of possibilities under discussion covering a variety of subject matters
[1:47] Isa Goodman: So I hear Malcom
[1:47] Isa Goodman: In line with the ability of Second Life to be used for simulations one of the projects will be looking at using simulation metaphors to teach year one students the theory of data transfer across a network, including such things as encapsulation processes, router and switch functionality, unpacking data, etc
[1:47] Kwanjo Rau: my system is continually not responding - I'll catch up in the wiki Jo , Kathie Warren - thank you all
[1:48] Isa Goodman: You dont want to know CC
[1:48] jokay Wollongong: Thanks for coming Kathie!
[1:48] Isa Goodman: *grins*
[1:48] Isa Goodman: It is a subject that new students struggle with and one that we believe can be dealt with in a fun and game-like manner at different levels of complexity
[1:48] Isa Goodman: Another we are considering will involve students learning the fundamentals of programming using the Linden Scripting Language. The gaming environment nature of Second Life lends itself I believe to a lighter introduction to these sorts of subject matter
[1:49] Isa Goodman: Other subjects that we are investigating are aspects of dance and music, from Second Life performances to subjects such as streaming audio, DJing and sound system setup simulations
[1:49] Isa Goodman: While conversations so far have been around the efforts of NMIT setting up an educational facility inside Second Life there has also been interest shown by other polytechs with a number of requests for participation
[1:49] Isa Goodman: Fortunately NMIT has realised the benefits of collaboration in projects such as these and will be welcoming all enquiries for joint projects on the island
[1:50] Isa Goodman: Arwenna has also created a group for New Zealand educators called Kiwi Educators and currently we meet every Sunday at 2pm NZ time in NMIT’s Garden of Learning for general discussions on SL educational matters
[1:50] Isa Goodman: Yes A
[1:50] Isa Goodman: Though directed at the Kiwi crowd we welcome all comers and I believe jokay and Arwenna have already talked about the possibility of a regular Australasian meet up as well
[1:51] jokay Wollongong: Yes we have Isa..
[1:51] jokay Wollongong: We will keep everyone in the loop about that ;)
[1:51] Isa Goodman: So that briefly is what NZ has been up to in Second Life to date
[1:51] Isa Goodman: ty CDB
[1:51] Isa Goodman: thx all
[1:51] Decka Mah claps
[1:51] Isa Goodman: You're welcome
[1:52] jokay Wollongong: Fantastic Isa... thankyou! ;)
[1:52] Isa Goodman: np
[1:52] Sean McDunnough: any quick questions?
[1:52] Malcolm Dalgleish: Great stuff
[1:52] Sean McDunnough: you ncan always contact Isa for more info
[1:52] jokay Wollongong: Three cheers for the kiwi's too! ;)
[1:52] Malcolm Dalgleish: thx
[1:52] jokay Wollongong: Fantastic news! ;)
[1:52] Isa Goodman: Damn.. thought I was going to get out of those
[1:52] Isa Goodman: *smiles*
[1:52] Sean McDunnough: we can move on...
[1:53] Sean McDunnough: don't worry Isa!
[1:53] Isa Goodman: Will be here later if questions arise
[1:53] Sean McDunnough: next we have another video..
[1:53] Sean McDunnough: we will go with the one loaded up already...
[1:53] Sean McDunnough: it's Greg More fromRMIT
[1:53] jokay Wollongong: Hit play everyone.. .
[1:53] jokay Wollongong: And if a few could give a shout out that they can see it ;)
[1:54] Explorer Babii: Where's play?
[1:54] Misha Writer: yes see it
[1:54] jokay Wollongong: Down the bottom of your screen Babii ;)
[1:54] Sean McDunnough: movie control at the bottom of your screen
[1:54] Sean McDunnough: Greg says: "The projects on RMIT University’s Francis Ormond Island are the work of my students from
our 2nd and 3rd year architecture and interior design courses. "
[1:55] Spinner Mills: this is COOL
[1:55] Sean McDunnough: "This semester we used
Secondlife as the primary design media for the studio; based on 4 years of experience
teaching architecture students videogame environments as a new form of design media."
[1:55] Spinner Mills shouts: Yeah!
[1:55] Sean McDunnough: "We
challenged our students to think about new forms of architecture for Secondlife, rather
than simply replicating architectures found in the real world."
[1:56] Explorer Babii: Am getting ,music but no video?
[1:58] Sean McDunnough: we will make all of these videos available later
[1:58] Annalisa Voom: Love the hats
[1:58] Isa Goodman: Yeah... break out the dance balls
[1:58] Spinner Mills: my household is getting down!
[1:58] Isa Goodman clpas
[1:58] jokay Wollongong: hehehe..... agreed! ;)
[1:58] Sean McDunnough: ok... has everyone seen the film?
[1:58] Annalisa Voom: claps
[1:58] Isa Goodman: yes here
[1:59] Spinner Mills: someone has been taking party drugs? :)
[1:59] Sean McDunnough: cool...
[1:59] Sean McDunnough: ok... next we have Lindy McKeown (aka Decka Mah)
[1:59] jokay Wollongong: Fantastic stuff.... i'm looking forward to seeing moreof Greg and his students work! ;)
[1:59] Explorer Babii: How do I get rid of the I peak english window?
[1:59] Sean McDunnough: come on up, Decka
[1:59] Isa Goodman: yeah Decka
[2:00] Malcolm Dalgleish: lsa i wanted to send you a friend invitation but can't find you on the list
[2:00] Sean McDunnough: Decka?
[2:00] Isa Goodman: Right click on me Malcom
[2:00] Malcolm Dalgleish: Where are you?
[2:01] Isa Goodman: front row left end
[2:01] Sean McDunnough: deck has her own slide viewer
[2:01] Sean McDunnough: sorry Decka
[2:02] Sean McDunnough: please don't play the video
[2:03] Sean McDunnough shouts: Please don't click on Decka's slide show
[2:03] Annalisa Voom: It starts then stops
[2:03] Annalisa Voom: Not me either
[2:04] Explorer Babii: Do I want to submit a new media url - not sure why I have that screen...
[2:04] Sean McDunnough: to zoom in hold down the alt key and click on the screen with the mouse
[2:04] Misha Writer: which screen?
[2:05] Annalisa Voom: Nothing is on the screen though to zoom in on
[2:05] Sean McDunnough: the one that says freeview
[2:05] jokay Wollongong: How are you going Decka... damn lag! ;(
[2:06] Sean McDunnough: here she comes
[2:06] Decka Mah: My research looks at taking a well known and widely used pedagogy called Action Learning online in 3D in an attempt to create the social presence needed to allow deep learning to occur.
[2:07] Decka Mah: My research is supported with a grant form the Queensland State Government here in Australia.
[2:07] Decka Mah: Action Learning is a simple, but powerful, cyclic process developed in the 1930s by Reg Revans.
[2:07] Decka Mah: It is sometimes called Action Research but I find the term research frightens some participants.
[2:07] Decka Mah: At the heart of the Action Learning Cycle is the participants workplace project.
[2:07] Decka Mah: It is this project that becomes the context for all the learning.
[2:08] Decka Mah: Although an Action Learning Program may be created around a theme (such as teaching in Second Life, management, communication, leadership, early childhood education) the content is the slave of the project.
[2:08] Decka Mah: yes but many people don't actually DO action leanring
[2:08] Decka Mah: they call their stuff AL but it is not real AL
[2:08] Lillie Carlberg: Hi Bron I saw you in the elluminate this afternoon
[2:08] Decka Mah: The participants learn as they do. It is not learn then, maybe at some future time, implement that learning. Implementation is embedded in the learning process.
[2:09] Decka Mah: As well as personal reflection, there is a social reflection process in Action Learning.
[2:09] Decka Mah: This occurs in a small group of 4 to 8 called a Learning Set.
[2:09] Decka Mah: This group meets about every 2 to 3 weeks during an Action Learning Program that may be between 3 and 6 months in duration.
[2:09] Decka Mah: The protocol used during this meeting gives each person time to describe their progress.
[2:09] Decka Mah: Other Learning Set members use questions to help each other learn, question assumptions and reflect on the implementation in their context.
[2:09] Decka Mah: It is not about giving suggestions. It is about deep reflection and the use of questions to clarify, support, challenge and learn.
[2:09] Decka Mah: Personal reflection can be supported by the use of learning journals.
[2:09] Misha Writer: Bron - Decka's text in green, with slide show on right of auditorium
[2:09] Decka Mah: Content can be included in many ways including participants finding their own resources,
[2:10] Decka Mah: core learning events that are compulsory for all
[2:10] Decka Mah: and electives that participants may choose to attend.
[2:10] Decka Mah: Another important aspect of the process is that it develops the skills of the lifelong learner.
[2:10] Decka Mah: We have trained learners to be passive and dependent and lifelong learners are self-managing learners. Action Learning models active self managed learning.
[2:10] Decka Mah: It develops the skills and attitudes needed for people to be active and interdependent learners within a learning community.
[2:10] Decka Mah: For Action Learning, this virtual world offers many useful attributes.
[2:10] Decka Mah: So, how does Action Learning work in Second Life?
[2:10] Decka Mah: The island of Terra Incognita was purpose built for this pedagogy of Action Learning after reading and discussion about social presence, distance education, Action Learning and online worlds.
[2:10] Decka Mah: The island uses many different types of places to meet the needs of Action Learners.
[2:10] Decka Mah: Each place has a specific role. The information hub is the Visitor Centre and the nearby Resource Centre with the PixelTrix filing cabinets for course materials and SL help files.
[2:11] Decka Mah: The greatest challenge in Second Life is to deliver the content needed for learners.
[2:11] Decka Mah: At times this requires group events. The Deckas Decks facility is designed to allow learner centred strategies while coping with the constraints of Second Life.
[2:11] Decka Mah: The connected pods fly apart to a safe chat distance of greater than 20 metres for small group discussions.
[2:11] Decka Mah: The facilitator can recall all pods when needed.
[2:11] Decka Mah: Handouts of notecards can be given to ach table of the whole group.
[2:11] Decka Mah: Summaries and activities on notecards can be collected in the drop boxes.
[2:11] Decka Mah: All chat can be recorded and emailed to the facilitator.
[2:11] Decka Mah: A streaming server is used to deliver the teachers voice to the class. Responses are done in text chat. (One way voice)
[2:11] Decka Mah: When at chat height, the groups can page the teacher with a button on the table.
[2:11] Lillie Carlberg: elluminate in sl
[2:12] Decka Mah: Screens allow video or other presentations at ground level and at height.
[2:12] Decka Mah: These facilities are available for sale on Terra and a users group shares uses and updates.
[2:12] Decka Mah: The edu-Gallery is a content resource for the program entitled Teaching in Second Life. It was created by (NOT FOR) participants as an activity to explore how Second Life is used by educators.
[2:12] Decka Mah: Participants searched for education uses of Second Life and then took a photo, wrote a notecard, created a landmark and organised the collection into categories.
[2:12] Decka Mah: This participatory process has left a resource for future groups in the form of the gallery which can grow with additional content as more groups complete this activity within future programs.
[2:12] Decka Mah: There are many small group spaces on Terra suitable for electives and for Learning Set Meetings.
[2:12] Decka Mah: These include relaxed spaces like the beach and surf club, pool and campfire.
[2:12] Malcolm Dalgleish: Cool stuff Decka
[2:12] Decka Mah: More formal seating areas also exist such as the magic table on Poinkys Peak. It adds chairs as needed, always leaving a spare chair for the next person.
[2:12] jokay Wollongong: I urge everyone to go and check out Decka's place... Terra Incognita is a great space ;)
[2:13] Decka Mah: The Play Deck with its mud wrestling, arm wrestling, trampolines, knife throwing, hangman and darts is the icebreaker area.
[2:13] Spinner Mills: great!
[2:13] Decka Mah: The Village has freebies for equipping avatars and learning navigation and object handling techniques.
[2:13] Decka Mah: Used for building rapport between new groups of participants, it is a social interaction zone that is fun as well as having a serious side.
[2:13] Decka Mah: It helps establish the kind of relationships needed in the Learning Set Meetings where people are prepared to describe their failures as well as their successes.
[2:13] Decka Mah: The edu-Mall will in future house educator tools for sale and for free. We welcome any additions to this growing resource.
[2:13] Decka Mah:
[2:13] Decka Mah: thanks everyone
[2:13] Decka Mah: pelase come and visit Terra
[2:13] Malcolm Dalgleish: Good stuff
[2:14] Annalisa Voom: what's the surl?
[2:14] Sean McDunnough: thanks deck!
[2:14] jokay Wollongong: Thanks so much Decka... your work on Terra is so inspiring! ;)
[2:14] Misha Writer: Decka this is a fantastic use of SL - constraints & all!
[2:14] Lillie Carlberg: Thanks Decka
[2:14] Sean McDunnough: if you have any questions...
[2:14] Sean McDunnough: see decak...
[2:14] Sean McDunnough: we ned to move on...
[2:14] Misha Writer: Can we visit at any time?
[2:14] Isa Goodman claps
[2:14] Sean McDunnough: we will try and get the video going again...
[2:14] Decka Mah shouts: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Terra%20incognita/152/96/33
[2:14] Decka Mah: yes comeanytime
[2:14] Sean McDunnough: it's by Gary Hayes (aka Gary Hazlitt) about AFTRS & LAMP in Second Life
[2:14] Decka Mah: but pleae be conscious of classes
[2:14] Decka Mah: and meetings
[2:15] Sean McDunnough: hit play on your movie player
[2:16] Sean McDunnough: can everyone see the video?
[2:16] Spinner Mills: yep!
[2:16] Malcolm Dalgleish: Not clearly
[2:19] CDB Barkley: G'Day as y'all might say, over here in Arizona, we give it a good "Howdy", even though it is 2am here.
[2:19] CDB Barkley: need some help with the slides, but here goes
[2:19] CDB Barkley: It's great to be here, though trying to talk about SL in 10 minutes is not easy. So these are just some highlights.
[2:19] CDB Barkley: As an intro, I am Vice President of Community and CTO for the New Media Consortium (NMC, http://www.nmc.org/), an international group of 250 colleges, universities, museums, research centers that focus on teaching, learning, and creative epxression.
[2:20] CDB Barkley: You know the old line about "On the Internet no one knows you are a dog"... in SL, everyone knows I am a dog!
[2:20] CDB Barkley: (I have slides somehwere oh well)
[2:20] jokay Wollongong: One Sec CBD...
[2:20] CDB Barkley: I explore web 2.0 stuff and develop programs, ideas for supoorting community in online spaces. Okay, I am a web geek.
[2:20] jokay Wollongong: We'll get your slides organised
[2:20] CDB Barkley: I'll dance
[2:21] CDB Barkley: NMC has been in SL since early 2006, and our phrase "Seriously Engaging" references a video created to describe the potential of SL and what the NMC envisioned when we started - see http://sl.nmc.org/2006/06/12/seriously-engaging-movie/
[2:21] jokay Wollongong: hehe... sorry... you're just a bit ahead of us... hehehe ;)
[2:21] CDB Barkley: ok
[2:21] jokay Wollongong: There you go ;)
[2:21] CDB Barkley: Our activity was an outgrowth of ongoing work of our Horizon Project on emerging technologies (http://www.nmc.org/horizon) in late 2005 which pointed towards educational gaming and virtual worlds, and our contacts showed us Second Life.
[2:21] CDB Barkley: It suddenly was viable to ahve good numbers of people participate in a rich 3D environment w/o too much tech overhead.
[2:21] CDB Barkley: As a small aside, I am visiting in your region in RL this October as part of the Australian Flexible Learning Framework; stay tuned to the plans at http://cogdogroo.wordpress.com/
[2:22] CDB Barkley: We each likely have our own "aha" moment- mine was at the July 4 liftoff of the space Shuttle, where I joined 60+ other avatars at the International Space Flight Museum to watch the live video from NASA.
[2:22] jokay Wollongong: We are looking forward to your visit CDB! ;)
[2:22] CDB Barkley: Now I could have easily watched it directly on a video player or elsewhere on the web, but the experience in Second life was enhanced greatly by experiencing it in the presence of others, each sharing their excitement of memory of watching Apollo rockets lift off.
[2:22] CDB Barkley: It was electric, and I felt connected with others.
[2:22] CDB Barkley: You can track all of the NMC's efforts, events, and news at our NMC Campus Observer web site, actually a blog, at http://sl.nmc.org/
[2:22] CDB Barkley: One of our efforts was to create a group that meets informally every 2 weeks to talk about and share ideas on using SL for education- this is the NMC Campus Teachers Buzz session, http://sl.nmc.org/wiki/Teachers_Buzz_Session
[2:22] CDB Barkley: With help from colleague Corwin Carillon, we have had a great year of open discussions, field trips, guest topic leaders (like Joe Lambert on the idea of digital storytelling in SL). It is free to all to particiaate in
[2:23] Isa Goodman: Yeah go the Buzz
[2:23] jokay Wollongong: Yay.. Teacher Buzz is fantastic ;)
[2:23] CDB Barkley: Our Oct 2006 Impact of Digital Media Symposium was a large scale 10 day affair with presentations, workshops, music performances, historical re-enactment, and more, capped by a live closing keynote for Howard Rheingold http://sl/nmc.org/wiki/Impact_of_Digital_Media_Symposium
[2:23] CDB Barkley: Our friend Anya here arranged a great set of sessions live from Australia
[2:23] CDB Barkley: An exciting event during this was a live video stream of a press conference in New Yoirk where the MacArthur Foundation announced their US$50 million program for digital media.
[2:24] CDB Barkley: The video was streamed into NMC Campus, and our virtual audience there was displayed on thre screen in New York for the Rl audience to see.
[2:24] CDB Barkley: Our SL particpants was able to interact with the panel discussion going on in RL. http://sl.nmc.org/2006/10/19/macarthur
[2:24] CDB Barkley: We have had unique arti performances such as Dan Coyote Antonelli's ZeroG Skydancers - fluid avatars choreographed to live music http://sl.nmc.org/2006/11/28/zerog
[2:25] CDB Barkley: I is an unbeliavable things to see
[2:25] CDB Barkley: Breaks a lot of conventions, in a creative way
[2:25] CDB Barkley: The theater can be instantly re-arranged to different confgs... in the round, in rows, etc
[2:25] CDB Barkley: and they can teach stage design, lighting, etc1
[2:25] Sean McDunnough: please don't play the video
[2:25] CDB Barkley: In April 2007, Red {an orchestra} provided the first live simulcast of an orchestra to an audience in Cleveland, and 4 other locations in Second Life.
[2:25] CDB Barkley: We've had a professor from Northwestewrn University teach in world acting and improv techniques in our virtual theater.
[2:26] CDB Barkley: NMC has branched out to provide building and low coast consulting services to educators via our Vritual Worlds program http://virtualworlds.nmc.org
[2:26] CDB Barkley: And we have had a great stream of interest in our rental parcels, for as low as US$100 per year for a plot of land, with shared facilities for meetings, events, galleries, etc.
[2:26] CDB Barkley: I should let you know I cannot build more than plywood cubes in SL, but we need to focus less on the buildings and things, and more on the activities and experiences we can create in SL- there's much one can do w/o owning any land or RL replicas.
[2:26] CDB Barkley: So my challenge to you is to think more about creating 'experiences' beyond duplicating what is possible in RL places.
[2:27] Isa Goodman: Yes
[2:27] CDB Barkley: It is still very early in what we can do in these places
[2:27] Spinner Mills: I agree
[2:27] CDB Barkley: I've spit out a lot quiuckly, and only touched on what we are doing, so feel free to bug me later for more info
[2:27] CDB Barkley: Thanks... this dog needs some sleep!
[2:27] Anya Ixchel: *claps*
[2:27] Sean McDunnough: thanks heaps CDB
[2:27] Isa Goodman: thx CDB
