Interior DesignSecond Life can be used for a range of design and modelling activities including recreating and developing interior design concepts for real life using virtual worlds tools. The immersive nature of Second Life also allows for Interior design students to engage in client briefs, presentations and a range of other acitvities which assist them in professional development and improving communication skills. GippsTAFE Interior Decorating ProjectThe GippsTAFE Victoria's (Australia) 'Virtual Worlds – Real Learning!' project explored how Second Life can be used to achieve real learning outcomes in vocational education, and was funded by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework in 2006 and 2007. As part of this project, a pilot group of students from the Certificate IV in Arts – Interior Decorating course, students undertook 'interpret and respond to a client brief' assignments in Second Life.During the project the ‘painting and decorating’ learners took on avatars as interior designers. Each avatar was allocated a different client – clients were avatars of members of the project team. Each client approached their interior designer avatar through Second Life and arranged a meeting to discuss in detail their brief for redecorating their house within Second Life. The trial culminated with the interior designers redecorating the clients’ living areas to the satisfaction of each individual client.
