Language Teaching and Practice, and Language Immersion

As well as being used by language teachers - including ESL/TESOL - to run language classes, Second Life also provides opportunities to interact with native speakers of target languages.

English Village

Founded by Fire Centaur (an ESL teacher in real life), English Village (SLurl) is an immersive 3D simulation for language learners and teachers across the globe. It's a place where language teachers can come together to create community and collaborate as they explore the possibilities of teaching languages in Second Life. By providing classrooms and teaching tools the English Village provides an easy entry to the world of teaching in Second Life for language teachers.

A central feature of the English Village are holodecks which provide a huge range of different scenes that can be swapped at the click of a button and can be used for roleplays. The scenes include a restaurant, a bus stop, a hospital scene, a shopping center, a post office and a doctors office.

The Language Lab - Be virtually fluent in no time

The Language Lab was created by Edgware Marker aka David Kaskel late in 2005, and uses Second Life to create immersive language learning opportunities for students, in a realistic environment with native-speaking teachers. They completed their beta phase and delievered their first course to fee-paying students in 2007.

Students of LanguageLab visit the school's 120-acre island, where a full city has been created, and can take part in a range of activities including role-playing activities in one of the realistically detailed hotels, bars, nightclubs, office parks, or stores; or attend scheduled classes which meet for 50 minutes several times a week. Additionally, students can engage in a range of social learning opportunities - meeting classmates to play a game, such as the football-field-sized Scrabble game, or socialize in Language Lab's informal learning spaces.
