Social Science and Anthropological Research

Second Life provides an immersive environment for social science and anthropological research, with a wide range of communities and cultures within it's resident's population. Students can explore behaviour, psychology and culture in an authentic and realistic way, trialling research strategies, surveys and oral history techniques.

Field Research in Second Life

Dr Ed Lamoureux (aka Professor Beliveau), of Bradley University, taught a course titled "Field Research in Second Life" in 2006, using Second Life as an arena to learn ethnographic field research methods.

During the course, students used qualitative research methods to explore communities of practice in Second Life. Each student in the class chose a different Second Life community to research by observation or by conducting interviews, and produced a final report on their study.

For further information check out the Syllabus materials from the course, read the students' blogs which include research notes and final papers, read a review of the class by Dr Lamoureux or watch a Quicktime movie about the class.
